Challah Bread
Challah Bread Recipe: A Delicious and Traditional Jewish Bread
Challah bread is a traditional Jewish bread that is perfect for any occasion. This bread is soft, fluffy, and slightly sweet, making it a perfect addition to any meal. In this recipe, we will show you how to make this delicious bread from scratch.
Ingredients:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 3 large eggs
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 tbsp honey
- Sesame seeds (optional)
Serving: 8-10
Cooking Tips:
- Make sure your yeast is fresh and active. If it's not, your bread won't rise properly.
- Use warm water, not hot water, when activating your yeast. Hot water can kill the yeast.
- Let your dough rise in a warm, draft-free place. This will help it rise properly.
- Brush your bread with egg wash before baking to give it a shiny, golden crust.
Cooking Process:
1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.
2. In a separate bowl, mix yeast and warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
3. Add the yeast mixture, vegetable oil, eggs, egg yolk, and honey to the flour mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
5. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a damp towel. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
6. Punch down the dough and divide it into 3 equal parts. Roll each part into a long rope and braid them together.
7. Place the braided dough on a greased baking sheet and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
8. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Brush the bread with egg wash and sprinkle sesame seeds on top (optional).
9. Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes until it becomes golden brown.
10. Let the bread cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
